She hired Donovan Payne from T-K-G Solutions to convert her garage into a granny flat. The 71-year-old paid an R81 000 deposit to Payne. He’d quoted her R114 000 for the renovations. As the months rolled on, so too did the excuses. “He kept asking for money, saying he had problems with this and problems with that.”

Donovan Payne’s surname could not be more fitting because pain is all that remains in the wake of his pathological lies, smoke and mirrors. We hired him to replace our main complex gates and without him doing a stitch of work he stole our R32,000 deposit, leaving us with a financial void and the decrepit gates we were in desperate need of replacing. In the time we waited for Payne and T-K-G to replace the gates or return our deposit the gates became more unstable and a section had even fallen over and damaged a car. What if it had landed on one of the resident children?
Another victim came foreward, telling the story of how she took Donovan Payne and Angelica Walters on as tenats after they produced seemingly legitimate references from an estate agent. The two did not pay rent for several months and she almost lost her house as she could not service the bond.
